Using Your HSA and FSA With Popular Retailers

When most people think about using their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), they think of doctor visits, prescriptions, and medical bills. But did you know these funds can also be used for thousands of everyday health-related products that you're already buying?

What Can You Purchase?

Many popular retailers offer thousands of HSA/FSA-eligible products that can be purchased using your pre-tax healthcare dollars. Common eligible items include:

  • First aid supplies

  • Pain relievers

  • Allergy medications,

  • Blood pressure monitors

  • Sunscreen

  • Menstrual products

  • Contact lens supplies

  • Thermometers

Plus, many more eligible items than what you see here!

Retailers With HSA/FSA Stores

Several major retailers now have dedicated HSA/FSA shopping sections on their websites, including:

These online stores clearly label eligible products, making it easier than ever to maximize your healthcare benefits!

How to Use Your HSA/FSA Funds:

  1. Look for products marked as HSA/FSA eligible, either online or in-store

  2. Use your HSA or FSA debit card at checkout (if you have one provided by your plan)

  3. Keep receipts for your records

  4. If you pay out of pocket, you may be able to submit a reimbursement request through your plan administrator

Verify Eligibility Before You Buy

While retailers do their best to identify eligible products, mislabeling occasionally happens. Ultimately, the IRS determines which expenses qualify for HSA and FSA reimbursement.

The IRS Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses, serves as the primary reference for eligible medical expenses. If you're unsure whether a product qualifies, consult your plan administrator or review IRS guidance before making a purchase.

You can also search online for specific products using the eligibility databases provided by the FSA Store and the HSA Store, which offer easy-to-use searchable lists of qualifying expenses.

Stretch Your Dollars

Taking advantage of your HSA or FSA for everyday healthcare purchases is a smart way to stretch your healthcare dollars and get the most value from your benefits.
